Overview
UV Portraits uses phosphorescent pigment to make the status of an image conditional. Under ordinary light, information recedes. Under ultraviolet illumination, the portrait reappears as if activated by a system outside the subject's control.
Conditional visibility
The work connects the physical act of revelation to social and algorithmic processes that decide what becomes visible, what remains hidden, and which identities are made legible to a system.
The ultraviolet environment is visually seductive, but that seduction is inseparable from the loss of control implied by an image that can be switched on by another observer.
